2012 Upcoming Exhibitions

Laurie Anderson: The Gray Rabbit
January 18 – April 9, 2012

In association with One Yellow Rabbit High Performance Rodeo 2012. Laurie Anderson is one of today’s premier performing and multi-media artists. Through this autobiographical video installation – where dreamlike video images shift on a transient sculptural landscape – Anderson re-explores her memories of a pivotal childhood event, realizing that what she remembers and what she recounts to people is a “cleansed” version of the tale … what is palatable for her to remember.

Edward Burtynsky: Encounters
January 21 – April 9, 2012

Edward Burtynsky’s photographs document landscapes that have been transformed by human activity. His subjects are rich in detail and large in scale yet open in their meaning. Glenbow has invited 30 Canadians from different walks of life and with different perspectives, to each select a work by Edward Burtynsky for this exhibition. Each community curator brings their own meaning to the artwork, creating a new dialogue about humanity’s impact on the landscapes Burtynsky photographs.

Iain Baxter&: 1N4ORMAT1ON
January 21 – April 9, 2012
Iain Baxter& is recognized internationally as one of Canada’s pioneering conceptual artists. For 50 years Baxter& has been creating thought-provoking work that is simultaneously a joy to experience. 1N40RMAT1ON explores Baxter&’s interest in the fusion and the confusion between natural and information landscapes in our world. The exhibition highlights BAXTER&’s interest in the environment and biodiversity and includes a major new site-specific installation created for Glenbow, as well as photographs, paintings and sculptural works.

Mavericks: An Incorrigible History of Alberta
Permanent Exhibition
Explore Alberta’s history through the lives of some of the fascinating people who shaped this province with their ingenuity, ambition and adventurous spirit. These men and women came from diverse ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds. Some were prominent public figures; others were “ordinary” Albertans. The people featured in this exhibition all have one thing in common: they were mavericks and their stories give us a glimpse into Alberta’s lively and surprising history. Step into the dynamic, interactive Mavericks gallery to feel, hear and experience what it was like for the artists and atheletes, cowboys and immigrants and Mounties and mountaineers who pursued the spirit of possibility that still flows through Alberta in the twenty-first century.

Niitsitapiisinni: Our Way of Life
The Blackfoot Gallery
Permanent Exhibition
Explore Blackfoot culture and history as it is understood by the Blackfoot people. Follow the Blackfoot from their bison hunting days, through making a Treaty with Canada, to their experiences with life on reserves and at residential schools.
